Basic Information

What if… you helped feed 6 million people?

Although our packaging opportunities happen all year long, once every year we provide the chance for thousands of Meals from the Heartland volunteers to come together to fight hunger in a mass meal packaging event. The 2011 Annual Hunger Fight happened August 31 through Sept. 3. We saw 13,602 volunteers come through Hy-Vee Hall to package a total of 4,214,592 meals! That equals 19,512 cases – enough food to fill nearly 15 semi-trucks! Amazing.

No meals can be packaged without first purchasing the raw ingredients. Our meals cost just $.20 to produce – that means just $20 feeds 100 people, and $50 feeds 250 people! Every dollar really does make a difference.

Volunteer
Meals from the Heartland appreciates all of the time and effort volunteers contribute to fight hunger at our events each year. We could not feed starving people without all of our volunteers! There are many ways you can volunteer at our annual event.

What can you do to get ready for the annual event?
Although dates have not yet been set for the 2012 event, it is never too early to start organizing teams to package and fund raise.  We invite businesses, organizations, churches and schools to gather teams of individuals to package together – it makes a great team-building exercise and opportunity to work together on something that can change the world! If you are planning to form a team, or are not able to volunteer at the event, we encourage fundraising to help the event. How many raw ingredients can be purchased determine how many meals are packaged in the end!

If your business or organization is also interested in sponsoring the event, please contact us at Contact@mealsfromtheheartland.org . Someone will respond to your request for information within 48 hours.
